Like most breeds of dog, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has health issues that MUST be addressed when considering purchasing a puppy, or, breeding a litter.
The most well known issues with this breed are , Hereditary Cataracts. P.H.P.V (both eye diseases) and L2-gHA which is neurological disorder that causes fits in affected dogs.
If you are buying a puppy, please ensure that you only buy from tested stock. Ask the breeder whether his dogs have been eye tested, if he says no, ask WHY NOT? Ask whether he has tested his stock for L2, if he says no, ask him WHY NOT? These conitions are well known to the majority of Staffordshire Bull Terrier breeders. It is up to you as puppy buyers to ensure that breeders test by ONLY buying health tested stock.
will take you to the site of the Animal Health Trust where you can learn more about these conditions. Please visit them.
I am very pleased to say that Millie and Bailey are both eye tested clear. Millies blood has been sent to the A.H.T and I am awaiting the results of her L2 test. Baileys blood was taken at the group testing session held at the Western Club Championship show on the 1st of October. Both results will be announced on the site when they are received.
We have now received results for both Millie and Bailey.
Unfortunately, Millie is a carrier of L2-HgA, but, we are very pleased to say that Bailey is CLEAR!!!
